Fresh Start in Charleston
My husband and I had visited my sister and brother-in-law in Charleston in October, and we fell in love with it. We also liked the idea of being by family again. So when he got a job here, we were ecstatic (although sad to once again leave friends behind). My husband's job gave us just enough income to survive, so he was fine with me pursuing music. Due to her current life-pursuits, my sister wasn't interested in forming an official "sister duo" with me, but was willing to support me as needed. After spending more time studying and researching various parts of being a musician, I began planning to record my first solo EP, supported by my sister (percussion and bgvox) and husband (bass). The songs on the EP expressed emotions I went through in my years of transition, and my heart to maintain hope and give to others throughout it all. I was then ready to pursue gigs. The biggest catalyst for me was being selected out of over 2100 applicants to perform at the Cooper River Bridge Run in 2015. This, and various press opportunities (videos of some here), helped get me into the groove of being a regular paid musician around Charleston. Over this time, I've developed my sound more, dramatically improved my skills in guitar, songwriting, and singing, and learned the types of songs that do best in various public venues. I've spent countless hours writing songs, memorizing/practicing them, and learning cover songs, totaling almost 40 songs that I can pull out to create the best set possible for each venue. I've mostly played out with my sister (gotta love sister harmonies!), but have occasionally been instrumentally supported by my husband and/or various friends (on percussion, cello, keys, or bass).I also opened a sole-proprietor business to keep it all official with the government... the business-side of things has been a huge learning curve in itself! A year after opening the business, I officially paid off all investments we made to get it started. (Thankful for God's provision, and the support/investment of fans, family, friends, and local venues!) This was a huge deal for me as making music and maintaining this venture is expensive... I'm grateful for every bit of support I receive!
