Write a song lyric with me!
I've been asked many times how I go about writing music.I just joined a creative learning community called Skillshare, where I created a 30 minute class to share just that! On Skillshare, you can take brief, creative, project-based classes in a variety of topics, including cooking, crafts, digital design, arts, music, etc.
Here is the description of my class "Write Song Lyrics that Inspire Change"
Is there something you want the world to understand? Forget social media rants! MUSIC is the language of the soul, communicating in ways that touch hearts and mold perspectives. I've been an inspirational songwriter for almost 15 years, developing my craft and learning from some of the best. I've seen first hand how songs can move a person to tears, to hope, to compassion, to understanding something from a new perspective, and to a life change. In this class, I will teach you how to take an idea you're passionate about, and turn it into song lyrics that have the potential to inspire the change you wish to see in the world.
Here is my referral link for you to get 3 months of classes (including mine) for $0.99. So fun!!! :) I'd LOVE to see you write an inspirational song lyric and share it with me on there!--I love expressing myself through music, but I will say that just like any other craft or skill set, it's not something that a person can just "pick up" one day and expect to be excellent without learning about it and being willing to grow. There are so many ways a person can write a song, but here's the basic process that I tend to go through. If something has been on my mind for a while, I figure others have probably gone through something similar, and it's an important thing to share. I usually start with a key phrase that I want to have in the chorus and think of how I could sing it. I develop the chorus lyrics and melody around that, then add the chords behind it.I actually flip-flop that process with the verses, since they don't have to be as "memorable" as the chorus hook. I start with the chords I want to play. I then brainstorm all I could say as an introduction into the chorus. I take those thoughts and form the verse lyrics through singing the phrases over the chords. I work to incorporate rhyme patterns and ensure the number of syllables fit with the phrasing. Most contemporary songs have a pre-chorus, which connects the verse to the chorus, and builds up the music. The bridge takes the concept to a new place lyrically, and it often sounds different musically, using chords in the key that have yet to be included.I've found that I enjoy adding metaphor and narrative to my songs, but that's my personal style! When a song is finished, I bring it to my husband to help me evaluate and improve it. I often improve it later on too, even years down the road!So there's an insight into my musical process. I may have sounded like a complete nerd, but I'm okay with that! ;)
